The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test required for admission to many graduate schools in United States and Canada. It is a requirement and part of the application process for graduate studies, business schools and law schools and it’s administrated by ETS.

Tutoring in Los Angeles has qualified tutors to help with preparation for GRE General Test. The sessions can be in-person depending on the location of the student or online. The preparation with a tutor usually covers the basics of the GRE test as well as content and test taking strategies and time management.

There is no specific number of sessions or hours or packages we offer, because we believe that each individual is different with specific learning needs and styles, with various levels of confidence and knowledge and therefore, each individual deserves an individualized plan of preparation. However, we recommend that the length of the tutoring sessions to be 1hour and 30 minutes and to start preparing for GRE at least 3 months in advance.

The tutor(s) will work closely with the GRE candidate to ensure that they cover the areas the student struggles with and make sure the student understands the content and becomes comfortable with the structure of the test and the type of questions presented on the GRE General Test.

The allowed time to complete GRE is 3 hours and 45 minutes and can be taken once every 21 days, but up to five times within 365 days.

GRE presents 6 sections:

  • Analytical Writing requiring the candidate to write 2 essays with specific prompts.
  • Verbal Reasoning has two subsections of about 20 minutes each with multiple choice answers, some with one answer and some with more answer choices. The verbal reasoning part of GRE is testing reading comprehension skills, text completion and sentence equivalence abilities.
  • Quantitative Section with 2 subsections of 20 questions each that need to be completed in 35 minutes. The math concepts covered in the GRE General Test include but are not limited to arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis topics from statistics and probability areas.

The mathematics section of GRE has different type of answer choices. The quantitative comparison questions require the candidate to compare two quantities. The one answer-choice is a multiple choice answer type where there is only one correct answer. The one or more answer choices presents a selection of answers and the correct response may include one or more of the presented answers. The numeric entry questions ask the candidate to enter their answer in the form of an integer, decimal or fraction. The Data Interpretation questions refer to tables, graphs or other data presentation and the answer is either multiple choice of both types or numeric entry.

The test allow the usage of a basic on-screen calculator.

Each essay can be written in up to 30 minutes. One of the essays is analyzing an issue topic selected from a pool of topics published by the ETS and from which the essay will be selected. The other essay is an argument task.

The test allow to one minute break after each section and one 10 minute break after the third section.
