CBEST stands for California Basic Educational Skills Test and is designed to test basic reading, mathematics, and writing skills of those who would like to pursue a career in education. Sometimes, the candidates willing to take CBEST graduated a while back, without further connection to the math or English concepts covered by CBEST and therefore they struggle to remember the topics or how to approach the test.

The preparation for CBEST always starts with a free assessment test very similar with the official CBEST test administered by the Pearson Education. CBEST has 3 different sections – Reading, Math and Writing. The Reading and Math sections have each 50 multiple-choice questions and the Writing Sections has 2 essays. Calculators are not permitted during the test. The Reading and Writing sections are 1 hour and 30 minutes per section and the Math section is 2 hours long.
CBEST can be taken as computer based in a test center or as online proctoring. Regardless of the method of testing chosen by the candidate, the results are released within two weeks of testing.
The passing score is 123 for all 3 sections of CBEST. The minimum passing score for any section is as low as 37, as long as the total score is 123. The scaled scores for CBEST range from 20 to 80 for each section. The passing score on each CBEST section is a scaled score of 41.
The questions in the Reading section of CBEST evaluate the ability to understand information from written passages, tables and graphs from a variety of areas. However, the questions don’t require outside knowledge, as all the questions related to a text can be answered based on the information from that text.
The Math section of CBEST evaluates the skills of estimation, measurement, statistical principles, computation and problem solving, numerical and graphic relationships. Most of the problems are presented as word problems.
