CBEST stands for California Basic Educational Skills Test and is designed to test basic reading, mathematics, and writing skills of those who would like to pursue a career in education. The passing score is 123 for all 3 sections of CBEST. The minimum passing score for any section is as low as 37, as long as the total score is 123. The scaled scores for CBEST range from 20 to 80 for each section. The passing score on each CBEST section is a scaled score of 41.
The questions in the Reading section of CBEST evaluate the ability to understand information from written passages, tables and graphs from a variety of areas. However, the questions don’t require outside knowledge, as all the questions related to a text can be answered based on the information from that text.
The Math section of CBEST evaluates the skills of estimation, measurement, statistical principles, computation and problem solving, numerical and graphic relationships. Most of the problems are presented as word problems.
