SAT is probably one of the most important tests in a student’s life, certainly the one with most consequences. An excellent score for SAT usually makes a huge difference in the acceptance decision from colleges.

SAT is along with ACT the test required by colleges as part of application packet and it’s administered by the College Board. For the last few years, UC schools, USC and other schools, such as Harvard and Columbia have been waiving the requirement for SAT results and for granting scholarships. However, starting 2025 school year, half of the Ivy League schools and many other colleges will be requiring again all applicants to submit a test score, which will need to be taken in 2024-2025 as part of admission process.

Tutoring in Los Angeles can assist your student with SAT preparation, starting with a free assessment test, administered in very similar conditions to the actual test. The student will get the scores in similar format as the actual score from the College Board. This is the basis of planning the tutoring sessions with a personalized plan; with emphasis on the areas the student needs more assistance. The tutor will work with the student to also improve the test taking strategies and the time management skills. To see an improvement in SAT scores, we recommend 6 months of preparation with at least one session per week. The student will be assigned homework and a commitment to complete it so that we can see progress in scoring. Regularly, the tutor will have assessments to see the improvement of the student and to be able to adjust the strategy of preparation.

SAT is offered only in an online version. SAT is structured in two sections: Reading and Writing and Math.

The Reading and Writing section of SAT has 2 modules of 32 minutes each with a total of 54 questions. The Math section of SAT has 2 modules of 35 minutes each and 44 questions. There is a 10 minutes break between Reading and Writing section and the Math section. Based on the student’s performance on the first module of each section the second module with have easier or harder questions.

Most of the questions are multiple choice questions, even though some math problems require input of the answer, rather than a selection of it.

The latest national average, released in September 2023 showed that only 25% of the students in California took the SAT and the average score for Californians was 1083.
